Conversation with Pete Cashmore of Mashable.com

I had a fun conversation with the smart and well-dressed Pete Cashmore of Mashable after speaking at the SF MusicTech Summit, where I was interviewed by Derek Sivers of CDBaby fame.

Pete and I discussed/answered:

1. What is the single most important thing that CEOs can do to conquer information overload?

2. The value of heirarchical thinking as a CEO or manager

3. Next plans for Tim Ferriss? (Forewarning: I’m evasive)

Have a great weekend!

Attention Aussies: I’m off to Sydney for about 10 days, so let me know if you’d be interested in doing a meet up with readers and having a few pints 😉

Bonus video for those left out of my tweets this evening.

The Tim Ferriss Show is one of the most popular podcasts in the world with over 500 million downloads. It has been selected for "Best of Apple Podcasts" three times, it is often the #1 interview podcast across all of Apple Podcasts, and it's been ranked #1 out of 400,000+ podcasts on many occasions. 1. You mentioned in a previous post you may think of methods to apply 4HWW ideas to craftsmen like musicians, potters, massage therapists… please still consider that topic for a future post. I’m in those categories and would appreciate all insights. I made one large change recently: I found an artist manager to work with me. Negotiations, administration, scheduling is taken care of.

  2. Is there any chance you are going to make it across the ditch to NZ whilst in the southern hemisphere?

Would be great to do a readers meet up over here!

  3. Tim-

    Greetings from Tucson.

Great points! I especially like when you point out email should not be treated the same as IM. This is a problem I have run into in the past, along with the sender of the email being personally offended because I did not instantaneously supply a response.

Through implementation of several of your suggestions as well as clear, concise communication I have virtually eliminated those issues.

If you DO decide to have a tv show, I will be sure to TIVO it!

  4. Ferris, we’re definitely interested in hearing more of ur adventures over a few beers mate. I have been working on internet marketing for the last 3 years and was inspired by ur book to take my first mini retirement last year! let me know if I can assist in organising a meet up in Sydney.

  5. Hey Tim,

When are you in Sydney? I’m on tour, but in Melbourne at the moment, back in Sydney in June. Might fly over for a day if the meetup numbers look good. 😉

  6. “You have to let smaller things slide.”

That was my favorite line in the video. We can’t do it all. Whether it be your best friend or Larry Page a person can always do more, but it doesn’t make since, not if we want to enjoy work. That’s why we got to let the small things go and focus on the projects that will pay dividends.

  7. Hey man, it’s been a while, sounds like you’re having a blast on the jet setting. I just caught up on your blog. I’ve been busy but just automated a new venture in the last few days which has freed up alot more time and loving the passive income. Don’t think I would have ever thought of it without your advice 🙂

Aus will be kick ass dude but you gotta get them to change that disgusting book cover and fire whoever designed that so that you can focus on the surfing.. that cover doesn’t even make sense and the guy with the balloons as colourful as they may be make the 4HWW look like a fiction novel about a trip to the amusement park.

Loved the elevator pitch tips btw in the other post – give me your thoughts on this? I want to really meet this person for over a year now. He wrote a book on getting rich, and is one of UK’s 100 richest dudes so not very accessible :p. I would cut off a leg to get the chance to learn a few things from him in person, and have some basic ideas of what he clicks on (writing poetry, even though he’s not very good at it…) If you were me – would you try to catch him live in person, perhaps when he’s speaking poetry (could be a waste of time / resources and still not get far), or to be more creative (write a fancy letter, or fly out to his island and risk going to jail? lol) 🙂 I have plenty of time these days, so could even maybe try to work in one of his companies for a month :p The outcome I’m hoping for is to see if he might be willing to mentor me a bit… but I feel like the value mismatch is so large it’s ridiculous (you were closer with WB for sure!)

Have fun out there in Aus. Oh and I got Amy’s email – did you ever get the new travel gear? I’ve told my cousin and it should have been sent out by now.

    ###

    Hey Dr. Vince,

I would definitely work in one of his companies and then ping him. He would have to respond on some level.

The travel gear is AWOL, it would seem, as nothing has arrived. No worries, bro, as there’s no need to send me anything, especially when it’s a pain in the ass 🙂

    Pura vida,

    Tim

  8. dude! pour soap and water over your dry ice! good white trash fun. I would know 😉

don’t ask questions on twitter! we can’t answer unless we come here. your book rocks!

    ###

    Hi SJW,

Thanks! If you’re on Twitter, you can reply to me with “@tferriss” in your reply or tweet, but this also works 🙂

    All the best,

    Tim

  9. Since you are coming to Australia, do yourself a favour and visit the Gold Coast. I work as an MC for Warriors Realm Australia’s best Cage Fight Show. Drop me a line and I will hook you up!!!

    4HWW rocks!!!

  10. Like the purple hair! That’s a Nice! (In Borat voice). Fun with dry ice. Mr Wizard did some cool stuff with it. You tube may have some vids. I also saw that you can blow a latex balloon up by itself. Place a small amount of dry ice inside a latex balloon and tie it securely. As the solid begins to turn into gas, the balloon will inflate by itself. Or a you can make a home made fire extinguisher. I’d say look that up.

I know what you do, you silly monkey. Book, book it see it and it is good! LOL You must know the art of the tease. 😉

Have fun in Sydney! I wonder if my sky diving friend Bobby will meet up with you. He’s funny and loves wine, like you. I will tell him to look out for a guy with a 10lb backpack and purple hair.

Hugs and have a safe trip!

    Jen

  11. I interviewed Tim and Pete separately as well just moments before Pete did. Check out the short video of Tim above as he offered advice on how to approach bloggers. You can link to Pete’s interview as well from that post. Pete talked about improving process with his life, business, and blog..

  12. Darn, why Sydney and not Melbourne? Not that Syd isn’t beautiful… But come to Melbourne!

  13. Hey, I’m for a schooner as they say here in Sydney or a pot as they call it in Melbourne. I’ve subscribed to comments on this post as it seems the best way to arrange.

  14. Hey Tim,

My friend and I would love to grab a schooner with you. Let me know when your going to be down here.

Make sure you check out the scuba diving down here, try Clovelly, and Gordon’s Bay.

    P

  15. Hey Tim,

It would be awesome to catch up in Sydney for a beer. Let me know if you are meeting up with some crew and where.

    Kai

  16. Tim,

    Next book idea:

    How to, simultaneously:

    1) Fill the void;

    2) Save the world; and

    3) Make money.

I offer my project as a case study:

    1) Void: Drive around the world in a Land Rover;

    2) Saving World: Teach people interest-free microfinance;

    3) Money: Ensure that step 2 generates traffic on muse.

  17. Hey All,

I’d be up for a visit to Melbourne as well. Questions:

    1. Where should I have the meetup in Sydney? I’d want to rock out, so we’d need space for at least 100.

    2. Location in Melbourne?

    @Em – I love “whilst” — you’re such a flirt! That’s one I wish we’d adopt over here.

    Tim

  18. Cookie’s a good place to meet up in Melbourne – big, a good range of beers and wine, and lovely Thai food. Can be noisy though.

  19. Pop into Perth as well Tim, Got a lot of people over here that will love to meet you and have a chat.

  20. Hey Tim,

It would be awesome if you could drop by Melbourne while you’re down under. I recommend either EQ or the Transport Hotel Bar as they both have decent views of the city because they are right on the Yarra river. They also have great drink selections and plenty of space.

How soon is this happening btw?

  21. Hi Tim,

I live near Melbourne. I’m a professional musician. You need to go to an AFL football game at the MCG. You need to go to the Ballarat Reptile Park (1&1/2 hr from Melbourne) if you want to touch and feel and feed Australian animals – and experience Australia’s drought (large empty lakes). There are many great hotels in the CBD of Melbourne. The Novetel on Swanston St. is good if you want something cliche. Up to 100 people, in the CBD? I’d say Zinc at Federation Square perhaps. Central and on the yarra river (near the MCG -walking distance). Hope to catch up – Al

  22. Tim – Be happy to shout you a beer in Sydney CBD, or if your keen to catch up on the Northern beaches let us know..

    Cheers James

  23. It has been a while since Tim published The 4 Hour Work Week. I am curious if there is some sort of list of success stories who have started a new and successful ‘automated’ business as Tim describes in his book. Anyone know?

Anyone such people among the commenters?

  24. Tim,

Plenty of good roof top bars in the middle of Melbourne. Weathers still ameanable at the moment. I came across your book in Miami 4 weeks ago and haven’t put it down since. Spend a lot of time between Florida & Melbourne and your book has pretty much changed what i thought i wanted in life.

    Hope your happy with yourself.

First beers on me when you get to Melbourne.

    Ken

  25. Tim

Greetings from Down Under. I am pretty confident I was one of the first Aussies to read 4HWW. I heard about it pre-release and pre-ordered from Amazon. Read it in 24 hours and loved it.

Why was I so keen? Because your story totally resonated with me. Business owner, putting in long hours and ‘freakin out’. That was me. I immediately put your strategies into play with great results. Cut my office time dramatically overnight, delegated like crazy, implemented an info diet and stopped checking email like a maniac.

I started doing mini-retirements too. In the last year from my Aussie home base I have travelled to Queensland, Thailand, California, Colorado (one month skiing), and Sabah Malaysia. Next week I am off to a tropical island for a small break and later this year I have already planned trips to Queensland and Vietnam.

Yes I love the 4HWW way of life.

Most importantly I am a micro-brew fanatic. I highly recommend Redoak Brewery/Bar/Restaurant in Clarence St Sydney. Meet you there for a life-changing selection of award winning beers.

    Cheers

    CW

  26. Hey Tim,

Would be very interested in the catch up for a beer when your here in Sydney mate, if you could also let me know.

Also, if your interested in watching a live AFL game while your here the Sydney Swans play in Sydney on Sunday the 18th of May.

Let me know if your interested as i can organise some tickets as my brother plays for the Swans.

Great to hear your coming to Aus mate.

  27. I appreciate living in the UK now – I felt I was hard done by traveling 250 miles to go to the London meet. Enjoyed watching the experiment Tim I believe the vibration comes from the coin causing the ice to sublime, meaning it momentarily rests on a layer of gas. It then falls through this layer and strikes the block causing the sound.

  28. I’m another one up for a Sydney hangout whilst you’re in Oz.

How are you going to let us know when/where?

  29. Hi Tim,

I agree with the second commenter Bill here. Actually I was the one asking you in a previous comment about how to apply your ideas from the 4HRWW when you have a creative job (Working with music in my case).

I would really like to see what you’ve been talking about on the MusicTech Summit. Any chance there will be a video online sometime soon? Or a blog post of course 🙂

    Thanks in advance

  30. I’M FROM PHILLY, IN PROCESS OF RE-DESIGNING THE REST OF MY LIFE, WRITING FROM NOOSA HEADS, QLD (Google it, you’ll like it), AND WOULD LOVE TO MEET FOR A “SKOO-NAH” (It’s not “a Pint” here)…However, Sydney is just the tip of the iceberg, I could repay the favors you have done for me, by sharing with you a few of my tricks and tips for doing Ozzie with style, on the cheap.

  31. Hey, I’m a lurker here, but if you’re coming to Sydney, I’m coming out of the woodwork! Would love to be involved in some sort of meet up or whatever you plan. Just let us know via email or on here (comments or separate post) & I’ll keep my eye out for it!

  32. Hey,

Just a couple of suggestions in regards to Melbourne. If it’s just a straight talk, then some great places are Novotel and Sofitel in the city.

Transport is one of those bars that everyone seems to love and it has a great laid back atmosphere and fantastic views of the Yarra River. It could fit 100 people but is definitely first and foremost a lounge for people to mingle.

    Hope these suggestions help

  33. Hey, Tim.

Glad to see the steaks made it.

    Idea for next book.

    The 4-Hour Give.

If you only had 4 hours of your life to Give to a Cause what would you do – Passion

What could you do in those 4 hours to have maximimum impact – Process

Could you develop a muse that supplemented the giving in those 4 hours- Profits for the Cause

Just a thought in line with the post above from RTW.

  34. Hey man. How was your chat with the guy from CDbaby. I am signing up with them this next week. Curious if you ever thought of how a musician takes the 4hww concept and applies it to the biz side of his artistry.

    sjw

  35. Tim,

With respect to watering holes in Sydney, I’d suggest that you first decide on a general location. From there, a venue will probably work itself out. Sydney’s a big town, so assuming you don’t have a lot of time to see the place then I’d consider an option along these lines:

    a) touristy — Bondi, The Rocks or King’s Cross

    b) groovedoggin’ — Darlinghurst, Oxford Street or Surrey Hills

    c) a bit more classy — The City / North Shore

Knowing you only from the book, I’m guessing that Bondi is more your go: lots of fit young people from all over the world hanging near an iconic beach. If you were more interested in getting a sense of ‘historical’ Sydney then some of the pubs hidden away up the back of The Rocks would do the job nicely. The city or the north shore are perhaps best if you’re coming straight out of a nearby event (eg book signing). And if you wanted to get a look at what’s stylin’ Down Under then Darlo / Oxford Street / Surrey Hills would be the places to see.

Obviously you can move from one to the next, but it’ll be a trick getting ninety-nine new friends into your taxi.

And whatever you do, don’t let anyone talk you into visiting Canberra unless it’s for business. 😉

  36. @Joe Frost

Thanks so much for the steaks, big fella! Can’t wait to have a feast when I get back from Sydney 🙂

    @Steve

Derek Sivers is amazing. I’ll be spending more time with him if I can. Very lucid and a very elegant thinker.

    Be good and have fun!

    Tim

  37. hey Tim, are you doing any speaking events in Sydney?

if so, me and my girlfriend would definitely come along to that

  38. Hey Tim! Thanks for the science experiment, love it 🙂

@ Craig – “I heard about it pre-release and pre-ordered from Amazon. Read it in 24 hours and loved it.” –

Me too 🙂 think we share some DNA ! Please Tim, have a microbrew with Craig, he also has a redoak that sounds very similar to the NC version, forgive the link, but you must read about the Purity Law of 1516:

    http://redoakbrewery.com/purity.php

Yummy, healthy (unpasteurized) stuff! Canned/bottled beers are required to be pasteurized by law in the US, RedOak refuses to can or bottle because it comprimises the purity of the beer. You know how good fermented foods and drinks are for you…saving you a spot at my favorite restaurant that serves Red Oak here in Raleigh! 🙂

    ~Marcie

  39. Hey there Tim,

I just wanted to leave you a quick note to say that I’m really pleased to see that you were audible in your interview with Pete at the summit last Thursday. (I had asked the ‘background chatters’ to quiet down a little, but to no avail… surprised? no.) Regardless, I thoroughly enjoyed your talk with Derek and I look forward to reading your book as you explore Australia. Just one word of caution: if you’re surfing, watch out for the man-of-wars, or as they call them there, bluebottles. They’re no fun.

    Take good care.

    Until next time…

  40. Tim if you are in Sydney and would like to indulge your interest in the combat side of life than I can introduce you to “The Shredder” from Richard Dimitri’s Reality Based Self Defence, Senshido. Or we can just have a roll.

I’m flying back from New York after photographing UFC ex champ Matt Serra on Monday

  41. Dear Tim,

I was strolling through the local library today when I came across your book. Later on this evening I read 103 pages of it. After reading those pages the thought occured to me that this books appears to be beneficial for the office worker. I am a full time college student, a single mother, and I work as a part time tutor, robbing peter to pay paul. I undersand that I have not read the entire book, but couldn’t help wondering if your book will really help someone like me. I have never run a business nor do I have the credit or resources to do so. A lot of the tehniques described in your book I aready do. For example I cut out the media in my life a long time ago and I typically delete most of my emails before they are even opened. Time management is not actually my issue…its more about obtaining the resources to actually live without financial worry in order to better focus on what is most important in my life. I hope to hear from you soon.

    Susette

    ###

    Hi Susette,

Thank you for the comment. I know I’m biased, but I do think this book will help. I don’t often state this explicitly, but the principles are flexible and mostly based on both obtaining or creating needed resources.

    Best of luck,

    Tim

  42. Hi Tim I’m a big fan of yours. Would Love to catch up when you’re here. There’s a great milonga on Sundays.

    Ciao

  43. Hi Tim,

Can you please let us know your dates for aussie trip early so people who can arrange to go to Sydney or Melb, I’m from Brisbane and if you want to relax out for a couple days you should go to Gold Coast! Well be great to discuss some things with you and get my booked signed! haha

    Cheers,

    Poe

  44. Interesting advice about using an email autoresponder for personal or business email. I have always thought of email autoresponders primarily as a website marketing tool not necessarily as a productivity tool.

  45. Hi Tim

I am a sales coach for PLAN Australia, one of the largest aggregators in Australia. A high percentage of the attendees at the conference you are speaking at will be mortgage brokers from our organisation. Would we be able to catch up before or after your presentation? I have been promoting your book at all my workshops and would like to meet you in person. I remember your exercise for the entrepreuneurs in your Princeton course to contact a famous business person. I would like to pass this test! Kind regards, Gail

  46. Hi Gang, one more for the festivities in Sydney! Given the quality of responses on the blog in general, it’s sure to be one interesting meetup. Cheers, Jason.

  47. Keen as mustard for a Sydney meet up too!

I read your book around this time last year, right after I graduated Uni, and it really changed the direction of my future. I was being clawed into corporate suit life (which after spending the year traveling, and at heart being a writer, seemed unrealistic and mentally impossible), reading 4hww opened my eyes and helped me disregard all the people saying “back to reality…time to work your way up the corporate ladder”, and instead get to where I want to be.

    Thanks : )

  48. Tim,

I am so exhilarated by you. I just finished your book and am now going through it the second time, starting to implement things. Its just so much amazing information to absorb. I would make EVERY effort to meet you down in Melbourne if you were so inclined to head down there. I had a couple questions to ask you as well.

Do you believe that there is an amount of time you should be employed before approaching your boss with the idea of a remote work agreement?

And do all your suggestions and ideas work internationally, or are they just US based? IE: Magazines, dropshipping…

I would love to ask these in person in Melbourne.

    Love your work, Tim!

    Jezza

  49. hey Tim, really keen to hang out.

here’s a few convenient places that will hold 100+ on a busy night in Sydney

    – opera bar

    – ryan’s bar

    – the ivy (my tip)

give me a shout if you need things organised.

    thx

    – A

  50. Tim / Sydneysiders,

How about camping/partying at Cockatoo island, it’s an awesome venue in the middle of beautiful Sydney Harbour and cheap-as-chips.

An ex imperial prison, industrial school, reformatory and gaol (jail), it’s got Million-dollar views on a camping budget, and we can turn the PA up to 11 without waking the neighbours…

    http://www.cockatooisland.gov.au/venues/index.html

  51. Hi Tim,

Count me in for a Sydney drink or two. I was another of those who bought the book pre-order. Life-changing.

Looking forward to meeting you and everyone else you’ve inspired – keen to swap some stories.

    See you soon,

    Matt.

  52. Hey Tim,

very keen to meet up with you in Melbourne. I’m 22, stumbled across your book. AMAZING STUFF, already recommended it to friends, find it very unique compare to other books. applied speed reading straight away and GOLLY, finished the book less than 3 hours. so many tools and ideas in there, just don’t know where to start. working full time, started a business. excuses creeps in from time to time…like Susette, i want to be wealthy with no finiacial limitation, for me to pursue my dreams in the performing arts industry. With the business i have, biggest issue is marketing it. now that there’re so many internet software that ‘promised’ high traffic..etc..etc..what’s your view on that? how do you market in this internet thriving days when my internet knowledge is relatively ok? any recommendation? before i forget, let me know when and where is the meet up place in melbourne.

  53. Tim > I will be there for the Sydney get together.

Let me know what you need on ground > when you are here

    or before hand.

Let me arrange a luxury car to pick you up on your arrival and

get you to where you need to go.

  54. Tim,

Loved the book. Am on my second read now since I know I missed a bunch the first go around. I see you are up in the Vancouver area. You available to meet up? I am not too far away.

  55. Tim – Just saw your tweets about Media Temple support. They tried to convince me I was the only site having problemsbut I’m glad to know I wasn’t the only one they tried to convince that noting was going wrong. They used to be stellar, especially for support, but I’ve been really disappointed with them lately.

    Cheers…

  56. @ Andrew

Agree – Ivy mid week would be a pretty sweet spot. If you need back up on making calls through to the Merrivale crew let me know and I can back your calls up.

How do people feel about Ivy?

  57. Heya Tim,

    Hook us up for Melbourne!!

Transport seems like a good idea, it’s nice and big in a good location, and has the the biggest range of beers in Aust or something. There are plenty of places nearby we can move onto later on if you’re up for a big one 😉

If you’re looking for flights, check out this site:

    http://www.adioso.com/search/sydney-to-melbourne-mid-may-virgin-blue.html

    http://www.adioso.com/search/sydney-to-melbourne-mid-may-qantas.html

It’s an attempt to match/better the likes of Orbitz & Kayak, but with more of a 4HWW approach… it allows non-specific, “fuzzy” searches so you can take a trip wherever/whenever the flights are cheapest.

Hope to catch up down here in Melbs!!

  58. I loved the experiments with the dry ice 🙂 Apparently dry ice can also be used to make a dry ice bomb, by sealing the dry ice in a bottle of some sort, but it’s very dangerous and even illegal in some parts of the world, so I wouldn’t recommend you try it 🙂

  59. Great advice on your video interview, you’re absolutely right about the fact that we simply can’t please everybody when we’re in the CEO position. Started implementing your batch emailing process actually and it worked like a charm! Would love to check out your next project about video media. Hope you have an awesome time in Oz 😉

  60. Ok, I’m not from Sydney nor will be there to meet or have some pints, but… do you have any plans to come to Mexico any time soon? More specifically, I live in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico.

I’m really enjoying your book and blog and I would really like to meet you.

    Keep me posted!

    Thanks,

    Gonzo

  61. Hi Tim,

I just spoke with my friend in Sydney Kate Bezar: the Dreamer, Founder and Editor of the “mook” (cross between a magazine and a book) “Dumbo Feather, Pass it On” Check it out here: http://www.dumbofeather.com. Kate interviewed me for issue 14 and I mentioned that you would be in town for a few days. She’d love to interview you for her next issue! Here is a little blurb about this awesome publication:

“In each issue of Dumbo Feather, 5 remarkable individuals tell their stories. Their backgrounds and dreams are as unique as they are, but what unites them is their creativity, passion and integrity, and somewhere they found the courage to fly. In their own words they tell you how they discovered their passion, what inspires them, the lows as well as the highs on the journey and ultimately why they do what they do.”

So let me know if you are interested in doing an interview and I’ll connect you both.

Love to catch up while you are in Melbourne and thanks so much for the inspiring book.

    Laurent

  62. Hi Tim,

Another fan, another Sydney guy keen to meet up.

Happy to help arrange on-the-ground, if required.

My suggestion is a private room somewhere where we can get drinks and a feed. This should allow an exciting ‘like minded’ exchange with all, perhaps even a presentation or something could happen if it’s “our room” for the night…

    Bar Cleveland springs to mind.

    Peace,

    Wdae

  63. @ Kai

as much as i’d love to make a decision on the Ivy – this one’s not my call.

    and hence …

    @ Tim

will wait for the go-ahead first.

  64. Hey,

Great to see you down under Tim. I unfortunately am living over in Auckland so will miss the meetups. Let me know if you are ever in NZ again and I would love to meet you and show you around.

As for Sydney, make sure to try James Squire Amber or Golden Ales. Best beers in Australia (although I am sure some will disagree).

    Cheers mate,

    Matthew

  65. Hot to trot for Melbourne if your still in town…

    What are the details?

Catch you round in melbourne town…

  66. Hi Tim

Am about halfway through 4HWW and love it!

Wondering whether you’ve decided if you’re coming to Melbourne. If so, love to join the festivities!

    Cheers

    Katrina

  67. Hey Tim,

When are you coming to India!

You will be amazed at some of the time saving techniques used here ,like working wives in mumbai buying and cutting vegetables in the train on thier evening commmute back home, so they can start cooking immediately when they reach!

    Cheers

    Ruhvee

  68. Hey mate, just wanted to thank you for the support your book gave in changing my lifestyle. Here’s what I have managed to do in 8 months.

Since reading your book I gave my IT career (which I hated) the flick, and have worked entirely from home. It’s allowed me to focus on building my online art print business.

Paying the bills in the meantime with some rather shitty work (telephone fundraising etc). But sure enough, I am about to clinch a couple of national distribution deals with my business. Very pleased about that.

Once this happens I will employ someone to fill the orders, trade futures full time… and be 100% mobile.

A couple of things that nag me though.. the idea of outsourcing everything overseas, is unworkable on a larger scale. I believe we should try and keep it local.. it is kinda imperialistic to go around being a bigshot while Your Man in India does your hard work.

Also the bit in the book where cheated your way into 1st place in the kickboxing — man, that was not a cool move. You lost a lot of readers by admitting that.

Just had to balance praise with criticism dude! But I like what you’re doing.

    Hi Darren,

Congrats on all! For the kickboxing, I know a lot of people have taken this as I did not mean to write it. I didn’t break a single rule, rather I learned how to magnify my strengths within the rules, so I don’t view this as cheating. The high jump as you see it now was once “cheating” — i.e., the man who did the first back arch vs. hurdle-like form was labeled a cheater and now it’s the norm. I think that optimizing your performance within rules is the key to better competing, but I understand that not everyone reads my story that way.

Pura vida and good luck 🙂

  69. The atrium! Brilliant! I’m an indoor plant nut too. I gotta get me one of those happening in the office.

I’m sorry I missed your trip to Sydney all those months ago.

  70. Hi Tim,

In regards to your dry ice video, this appears to be some form of the leidenfrost effect hXXp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leidenfrost_effect –

In short, it’s similar to the way water beads up on a hot skillet by floating on vapors.

In this case, the vibration seems to be occuring because of gas escaping by way of temperature exchange. The coin heats up the dry ice creating CO2 (gas). The gas expands and escapes from behind the coin pushing the opposite side of the coin against the other wall of the CO2(solid). Rinse and repeat until the coin has cooled.

The leidenfrost effect has also been suggested as the way firewalkers walk on hot coals.

I’m not a physicist, but my science teacher showed us a video in 8th grade illustrating this concept. Hope this lends a little clarity to the vibrating coin puzzle.

    Best Regards!

Yes I was going to comment on the dry ice bomb, but wanted to make sure no one wrote about it yet. You referenced it, but I wanted to explain it in detail in the hopes that, since people are going to try it regardless of if they know how, at least they will know what’s going to happen, haha.

NOTE TO TIM: If you think this is stupid, I’m fine with you vetoing this comment, but I figured an educated person trying this was better than an uneducated one.

Like Jason said, it can be dangerous!! So, if you just can’t get over the urge to see it in person and try one, first make sure you are OUTSIDE, and in a very open area with no other people, animals, or anything else of value nearby.

Chop up some dry ice so that it is in small enough pieces to fit through the opening of a 2 liter bottle. Take the 2 liter bottle, and fill it a little over half, to 2/3 full of warm water. Do not use hot water, since that will make it pressurize too fast! You’ll get the same affect with warm water anyway. You take the funnel and place it in the bottle. Pour only about 1/4 cup dry ice in the funnel, and as soon as it is all in the bottle, seal it with the cap as fast as you can, and throw it as far away from you as you can, without throwing it high in the air, so it doesn’t hit the ground hard.

Wait 10 seconds or less, and it will build up enough pressure to blow the bottle open 🙂

Oh, and if this is illegal in North Dakota, then no I have never tried this 😀
